Welcome to the Preserve the Cape (PtC) group's news and information website for local residents and ratepayers who wish to see changes made to the Local Government Act's special charge scheme legislation for road-making in the State of Victoria

The PtC group consists of a loose association of property owners in the coastal village of Cape Paterson, Victoria, Australia - we are all volunteers. During the period March 2013 - April 2014 we conducted a successful campaign in opposition to Bass Coast Shire Council's $7.1 million proposal to suburbanise our township's unmade roads (Special Charge Scheme no. 27) which ended with Council having to abandon the scheme.

Core members of the group continue to meet regularly to discuss a new campaign phase ahead in which we hope to be able to assist Council to formalise a special charge scheme policy for the Bass Coast region and, ultimately, to see the Victorian Local Government Act special charge scheme legislation amended or overturned.

The group's spokesperson is Professor Nicholas Low, Professor in Urban and Environmental Planning, The University of Melbourne.

New! Community legal centres have become the latest victims of budget cutbacks by the Coalition Government, in a move seen by some as an attempt to silence advocacy. You can read about it here and here. [posted 16-05-14]
